Taylor McCloud — Pats Militia
Well, there they are, your 2016 New England Patriot Pro Bowlers — Tom Brady, Dont’a Hightower, Devin McCourty, and Matthew Slater.
Now, I could write some long piece about how these four guys, all team captains, played their asses of this year and are deserving of this nomination (McCourty & Hightower are iffy), but I’m not going to.
I’m sure all four of them are greatly appreciative of this honor but at the end of the day, how much do Pro Bowl nominations matter in New England? Answer: they don’t. This team cares about winning games and winning championships. Tom Brady and Matthew Slater get voted to the Pro Bowl almost every year and they never play in it. Even when they’re able to, they don’t go. Some guys would want a trip to Hawaii immediately following a playoff loss, but not Patriots. Winning is everything for these guys and they don’t have time to go across the country to play in the worst football game of the year.
So, yeah. I know this viewpoint probably seems pretty shitty, but it’s the truth. Being named to the Pro Bowl is a big deal and an honor for players, however, it’s not the most important thing here; playing for championships is. And hopefully, these four won’t even be able to play in this game because they’ll be in Houston, getting ready for Super Bowl LI.
P.S. The only real care I have about this Pro Bowl announcement is LeGarrette Blount not being on the roster. His yards/carry isn’t great, but holding the league leader in rushing touchdowns out of the game seems pretty ridiculous. Again, the Pro Bowl isn’t terribly important and Blount would rather be in Houston, but that’s a snub I don’t agree with.
