Garoppolo Shines as Patriots Beat the Bears 23-22

Philip Tor | Pats Militia

If we are to take one thing away from preseason game #2, it is that Jimmy Garoppolo is ready to play. Yes, there are still some things that he must improve before Arizona on September 11th, but he looked damn good in tonights game. The stat line is eye popping,

16-21, 181 Yards, 1 TD

That is a great night for Garoppolo and a preformance that Patriots fans needed to see. I don’t know about the rest of the fans but this game by Jimmy gave me hope that the Patriots are going to be ok. Jimmy looked great in the pocket, he was calm and relaxed and made some great throws throughout the game.’

This gives Pats fans not only a good look at life without Brady during the suspension, but also life without Brady when he walks away from football.

Other position battles heated up during the contest as well. AJ Derby, a backup tight end once again showed up and had a GREAT game, catching 6 balls for a total of 71 yards and catching a TD pass from Garoppolo. With Gronk most likely out for the preseason Derby has stepped up and played reps with the first team, and has not disappointed. This performance will certainly help Derby, who is in a tight battle for the third TE spot, stand out to Belichick and the rest of the coaching staff.

One other thing I saw was a vast improvement in the protection up front by the offensive line. There were more than a few plays where Jimmy had loads of time to set up in the pocket and read the defense and deliver some great passes. The Scarnecchia return is ALREADY making a difference. Hopefully that group can find a solid rotation to help protect the young QB from a mouth full of turf.

2nd round pick Cyrus Jones also joined in the fun when he intercepted former Patriots Brian Hoyer late in the 2nd quarter. It was the first pro INT for Jones (Even though it doesn’t really count). The Pats eventually scored on a 1 yard TD run by LeGarrete Blount.

Belichick called the game and up and down night, which makes sense considering the Patriots couldn’t find the end zone a majority of drives. The Pats still are not capitalizing on opportunities there opponents give them, and are not playing the best football, but honestly its the preseason Bill, thats what its there for. We all know the Pats we know and love will show up ready to play in Arizona on September 11th. Until then lets relax guys, Jimmy G will be a fine quarterback for the New England Patriots.

LETS GO PATS!!!!
