Patriots Cut Griff Whalen, Sign Michael Floyd

Taylor McCloud — Pats Militia

The second Arizona cut Michael Floyd after he was arrested for a DUI, I knew he had Patriots written all over him. He’s a big wideout (6’2″, 220LB), something this team needs, and he’s proven to be a serviceable player throughout his career. He’s not a guy that’s going to set the world on fire, but he can go out there and catch a couple touchdowns and stretch the field a little bit.

Though, I’m not going to get too excited about this move — Floyd hasn’t performed to expectation this year and is fresh off of a DUI. That’s not a great combination, especially when you throw in the fact that the New England offense is incredibly complex and a lot of guys have trouble figuring it out. However, if you asked me which team capitalizes on these types of situations more than any other NFL team, I’d tell you it’s the one sitting in Foxborough.

Plus, I think the fact that Carson Palmer is on the downswing probably hasn’t been great for Floyd. We’ve seen a million guys come through New England and turn into legitimate weapons because they’ve gotten to catch balls from Tom Brady. Hopefully this situation will be much of the same.

P.S. Michael Floyd played in the Charlie Weis offense when he was in college at Notre Dame. That’s important. While not exactly the same, the Patriots current offense is based on a package Weis installed during his stint as offensive coordinator. It’ll be interesting to see if that will have a positive effect on Floyd’s development in New England.

Go Pats.
