Patriots Select Arkansas DE Deatrich Wise With 131st Pick

If you thought the Patriots were done bolstering the defensive end position after they selected Derek Rivers, think again.

Deatrich Wise Jr., the son of Deatrich Wise, a member of two NFL practice squads in the late 80s, is your newest New England Patriot.

A defensive end hailing from the University of Arkansas, Wise Jr. became a starter in his senior year of college. That year, the 2016 season, he recorded 49 total tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Obviously, those are underwhelming numbers. Traditionally, you’d want more production from a starting defensive end in the SEC. However, the numbers don’t necessarily tell the entire story.

In previous seasons, and 2015 specifically, Wise Jr. proved he was capable of producing at a high level. As a backup that season, he forced two fumbles and recorded eight sacks.

And, according to his draft profile on NFL.com, Wise Jr. possesses other features that make him a promising prospect. First, he has “uncommon arm length (35 inches) with enormous hands.” Second, he is incredibly strong. Wise has “terrific power in his punch and is able to jolt tackles with it.” Likewise, he “uses brute force to set a strong edge.” The Patriots’ defense is one in which defensive ends are expected to get across the face of the blocker and funnel both quarterbacks and running backs into the middle of the field where the Alan Branches and Malcolm Browns of the world are waiting with open arms. (If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, watch a couple Chris Long highlights from last season and you’ll see that he often worked up the field in an attempt to not allow ball carriers outside of him.)

Also, Wise Jr. is not the first defensive end the Patriots have taken from Arkansas. In 2015, the team selected Trey Flowers in the fourth round of the draft. Flowers, a breakout player for the reigning Super Bowl champions, is quite familiar with Wise Jr., a former Razorback teammate.

If everything works out as planned, Flowers will take the player who calls him a big brother under his wing and show him the ropes in New England. I certainly don’t expect Wise Jr. to evolve into the type of player we’ve come to known Flowers to be, but I’ll be thrilled to get anything close to that.

Go Pats.

P.S. Check out some more Wise Jr. highlights.
