Pats Down Dolphins 31-24, Garoppolo hurt, What’s Next for New England?

Philip Tor | Pats Militia

Sunday was an emotional roller coaster for us Patriots fans. For the majority of the first half we were riding high. Jimmy G was rifling touchdown after touchdown, marching the Patriots down the field over and over again, stifling the Miami defense and most of all making a name for himself, and proving the Bill Belichick is an evil mastermind.

Garoppolo connected with Amendola twice for a pair of TD’s and also threw a TD pass on a rope to Martellus Bennett from about 20 yards out. Even teh running game was rolling thanks to the efforts of LeGarrette Blount, who rushed 29 times for 123 yards and a score. not to mention a DISGUSTING leap over Byron Maxwell

Then the unthinkable happened. The Patriots rolled out to a 24-0 lead and got the ball back with around 6 minutes left in the half. Once again they started to march down the field with Jimmy G completing pass after pass, then it happened.

Jimmy went down with what looked like a serious injury to his right throwing shoulder. Now we have confirmed reports that it a mild AC Joint Sprain and he could be ready to go in a week or two. The Patriots have already gone ahead and ruled him out for Thursday night’s color rush game against the Houston Texans, so your starting Quarterback will now be rookie 3rd round pick Jacoby Brissett.

After the shock of losing Garoppolo faded away, I realized that we really don’t have anything to worry about. Brissett played well in his first NFL action going 6-9 for 92 yards and rushing for another 12. The Patriots did hang on for a 31-24 victory after a ferocious comeback led by Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Duron Harmon clinched the victory with an interception in the back of the end zone on a last second scoring attempt by the Dolphins that would’ve tied the game at 31. This was, in most part, due to Stephen Gostowski missing a kick that is usually automatic for him from 39 yards out. 2-0 is a good place to be right now. It give the Patriots room to work with as they wait to get Brady back in 2 weeks.

While he didn’t look as sharp as Garoppolo, Jacoby Brissett showed me enough for me to realize that he can lead this team, and here is why.

Even with Garaoppolo, the Patriots kept the playbook simple and easy. Short passes, spot runs, and quick routes were the majority of plays called. Brissett’s ability to keep plays alive with his legs will help him extend plays and find open receiver, especially with our quick and shifty receiving core. This matchup with Houston will be a tough first start since Houston gave up the third least total yards per game in 2015. With the way the Patriots defense has preformed through these first two games, I have faith that they can hold Brock Osweiler and company enough to put a few points up on the board and escape with a win Thursday.

Even if the Texans come out with a victory, it honestly does not matter. I don’t care if we lose these next two games as long as we keep the core of this team healthy for weeks 5 and beyond. What happened last year with injury after injury cannot happen again this year. This team is too good and too deep for that to happen again.

As far as the Quarterback situation goes, Bill will probably bring in a free agent to backup Brissett for a week while Jimmy heals, and I would have to think that Julian Edelman would be ready to step in at QB for emergency situations, as he played the position in college, and has proven he can make plays catching, running, and even throwing the football.

But seriously Pats Nation, we have nothing to worry about. This is what Belichick does. He does not crack under pressure, and he finds ways to win games. Hightower and Gronk are potentially back this week, which is huge for this team going into a short week facing off against a good team.

Next man up, it’s your time Jacoby. Show us you can ball.

Go Pats (2-0)

No Brady. No Gronk. No Jimmy. No problem 2-0
