This game has all the makings of a snoozer.
Injuries, the 4pm start, the 3-7 Jets, Ryan Fitz-Loser, and crappy weather
This is not what I would call the formula for an exciting football game. But you know what? We get to wake up today and watch Tom Brady play football, so be happy. The Jets suck and hopefully the Patriots will walk all over Todd Bowles defense this afternoon.
The only wild card today will be the health of the Patriots guys. Gronk has been dealing with the chest injury since Earl Thomas blasted him two weeks ago, and Martellus Bennett has been ailing since weeks 5-6 with a variety of injuries (ankle/shoulder this week). Both of the tight end duo are officially listed as questionable while Special Teams captain Matthew Slater is ruled out with the foot injury he suffered last week.
Gronk and Bennett are not the only offensive weapons hurting, as Chris Hogan (back) and Julian Edelman (foot) are both questionable. Their QB is also listed as questionable with a swollen knee, but is there really any doubt that Brady will suit up today? Answer:
Besides the injury bug running straight through our core, there are only a few things standing in the way of a Patriots victory. The Patriots have been relying heavily on the ground game lately which exactly what the Jets would want as they are 4th in the league in stopping the run but 19th through the air. If they can consistently stop the trio of Blount, White, and Lewis from getting loose and creating havoc that may be enough to slow the Patriots offense down to make it a football game.
The problem with that is that to make this a football game, the Jets would need an offense. Matt Forte has been a great acquisition since coming over from the Bears this past offseason, proving to be a reliable target out of the backfield. Brandon Marshall is well Brandon Marshall and thats about it for the Jets. After a career year for Fitz, his production drop faster than anyone had predicted as he has posted a league worst 67.6 passer rating (amongst quarterbacks with 150+ attempts).
So Bill please make this quick, don’t let these guys hang around, win by 50 and let’s move onto the next one.
Key Patriots Player: Logan Ryan
Key Jets Player: Ryan Fitzpatrick
PS: We all remember what happened last time these two teams met in week 12
